Vexed with Your Dry Skin?

Your skin is 70% water, and many skin problems are associated with dry skin. Dryness is exacerbated by wind, extremes of temperature and air-conditioning, all of which cause the skin to flake, chap and feel tight. This type of skin is tightly drawn over bones. It looks dull, especially on the cheeks and around the eyes. The skin has a parched look caused by its inability to retain moisture. It usually feels "tight" and uncomfortable after washing unless some type of moisturizer or skin cream is applied.

The skin loses moisture and may crack and peel, or become irritated and inflamed. Bathing too frequently, especially with harsh soaps, may contribute to dry skin. Not all dry skin is the same. In extreme cases, your skin needs to be healed as well as moisturised.

To prevent your skin from drying, you may want to consider these suggestions:

• Avoid caffeine, smoking, and alcohol.
• Increase healthy fluids intake. Increasing water intake of course is the foremost step in hydrating the body.
• Protect your skin from the elements, wind, sun, heat, and cold.
• In hot months, use sunscreen with moisturizer to prevent dry skin
• Avoid scrubbing with pads, mitts, or face cloths and pat dry the skin instead of rubbing with a towel
• Avoid long, hot showers and baths, especially during cold weather, as they dehydrate the skin.
• To keep your skin healthy from the inside out, eat foods with high levels of antioxidants, like fruits and vegetables.
• Apply a moisturizer to the skin during the day as a daily prevention of dry skin technique. Dermalogica's moisturizers contain powerful plant extracts, essential oils and antioxidant vitamins to hydrate, repair and protect the skin against the drying effects of environmental exposure, pollution and stress. Dermalogica Products are guaranteed effective.

Here is a tip to treat dry skin…but remember, prevention is better than cure.

Exfoliate. This is the foremost step toward healing dry skin. Dead skin cells can, over time, build up and become unresponsive to lotions and creams. In order for your moisturizer to do its job, you must first get rid of this dead barrier.

Moisturize. After you’ve exfoliated, you’re ready for moisture. Moisturize your skin after you bathe to retain hydration. Gently pat dry your skin, leaving it somewhat damp. Apply your favoured moisturizer to your face and body. Moisturisers work by hydrating your outer skin layers with water, so they become more expanded and smooth.
